Bakhtiari

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Known for their weaving prowess, the Bakhtiari, a tribal group living to the west of Isfahan in central Persia, were frequently commissioned to weave carpets of various sizes by neighboring city dwellers. This colorful, over-sized Bakhtiari uses a field design made up of vibrant motifs from seventeenth and eighteenth- century Persian garden carpet design. Rather than an overall, traditional garden carpet layout, motifs from this genre have been highlighted and repeated throughout. We see details of weeping willows, prunus branches, along with a variety of flowering shrubs, and even flower pots surrounded by a niche. This playful adaptation of classical devices is a hallmark of Persian tribal weaving.
