Bidjar

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

This happy Bidjar rug draws clusters of roses garlanded around a small central medallion. Vibrant vegetal tones of red, gold and green radiate against a deep indigo ground. Roses rendered with this degree of perspective are known in Persian as 'gol-i farang,' or 'western roses'. They became a favorite theme of late 19th century Persian weavers, who adapted them from French tapestries of the same period. Here they are infused throughout the composition: they line the medallion, punctuate the corner pieces and meander against the golden main border. The result is a magnificent Qajar era homage to French style, which is one hundred percent Persian.
