Silk Hereke

Early 20th Century
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

This Turkish silk knotted pile mat was most likely woven as a pillow cover or 'yastik' in the coastal town of Hereke just north of Istanbul. Hereke rug workshops were generally run by Armenian artisans but based their designs on classical Ottoman and Persian models. This small silk Hereke piece draws carnations, blossoms, and stylized palmettes in the manner of western Anatolian Ottoman weaving of the 17th century. Colors illuminate against the silk pile creating a sense of sheer luxuriousness.
