Karabagh

c. 1900
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

Woven in the historic Karabagh region of the South Caucasus, this dynamic Caucasian carpet proves that the weavers of this area during the turn of the century still had a well-spring of creativity and artistic vigor to draw from. Here the traditional Lenkoran design of columns of palmettes has been playfully reinterpreted, deconstructed and reassembled. Instead of individual palmettes the weaver has created a central column composed of squared ashik forms each flanked by saz leaves. The negative space within the central column may be seen as both part of an over-all larger blossom form as well a section of the deep indigo ground. An array of traditional weaving motifs from the Caucasus are drawn throughout the field including flowers, horses, purely geometric forms, and simple dots of color.
