Afshar

c. 1900
South Persian Tribal
DESCRIPTION:

Afshar rugs are perhaps the most popular tribal weavings from southeast Persia. The Afshar of this area are the descendants of Turkic people originally from Central Asia. They were removed from Northwest Persia by the Safavids in the 17th century and moved to their current location outside of Kerman. Despite their firm nomadic roots, Afshar weavers of the 19th century generally modeled their designs on Persian village weavings. This dramatic Afshar rug is no exception. Woven from memory with vivid vegetal color, the weaver has created a dynamic reinterpretation of a formal Persian lattice pattern. It has a unique rustic twist, as it is more concerned with color and flow of design than symmetry.
