Oriental Rugs, Vintage Rugs, and Antique Rugs by Peter Pap

Tibetan

c. 1900
Tibet
DESCRIPTION:

Woven with thick lustrous Himalayan high mountain wool, this 'khaden,' or Tibetan sleeping rug, depicts a theme most likely borrowed from finer, more delicate imported Chinese textiles of the Ming era: the imperial imagery of the dragon and phoenix. These figures are arranged around a central lotus blossom, which for Tibetans is an evocative and culturally powerful Buddhist symbol of enlightenment.
