Luri

Early 20th Century
South Persian Tribal
DESCRIPTION:

A veritable rainbow painted in diagonal stripes forms the field of this very happy Luri long rug from South Persia. These striped patterns were adapted to pile rugs by local weavers from traditional Persian textiles of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The main border of this piece, however, is distinctly from the weaving vocabulary of the South Persian nomads and forms a counterpoint directionally against the diagonal orientation of the field. White is used expertly adding light and emboldening the already saturated color of the piece.
