Kashan

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Elegantly using flowing ribbons of arabesque scroll, the field of this Kashan carpet paints a network of floral compartments in a repeat all-over design. Kashan, located in central Persia, was renowned for its dying and silk industries and it is likely that the design of this extraordinary piece was first conceived for weaving in silk. Grazing lands were scarce in this region and as a result weavers selected the finest wool available on both the national and international markets. Expertly dyed, color is magnificent as tones of aquamarine, gold, and rose radiate against a madder-red ground, excellently painting the garden of flowering trees and shrubs.
