Yuruk

Early 20th Century
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

Known in the trade as "Yuruk," the Turkish word for nomad or wanderer, these distinctive rugs from Eastern Anatolia combine thick lustrous pile with a deep cochineal ground. These weavings are certainly the work of the local Kurds from the villages of the southeast, perhaps from the area of Malatya or Diyarbakir. This piece is longer than most, and draws a column of five medallions. Each is rendered in the traditional fashion, with white crenelated outlining and triangular corner pieces. The field is outlined by an inner border of small tribal diamond-shaped latch hook devices with even smaller rosettes encircling each medallion. A lush white border with delicate colorful interlocking motifs frames the piece.
