Kazak

c. 1900
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

This geometric Kazak rug was woven in the south Caucasus some time around the turn of the century. Bold graphics are matched with saturated color as a classic Persian medallion format is reinterpreted with an almost minimalist new rendering. While this rug preserves the notion of a central medallion with anchor pendants at top and bottom, there is no way it could be confused with a formal Oriental rug. Rather, the village weaver of this piece has stripped the design to it fundamental elements infusing it with her own world view. Small groups of figures and animals appear towards the bottom, as the rest of the field is ornamented with traditional motifs from Caucasian folk weaving.
