Hamadan

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

This pleasant rug from the area of Hamadan in western Persia combines a formal Persian medallion format with a more playful village aesthetic. A central white medallion floats against a diamond-shaped deep indigo ground. Large eight pointed starbursts are drawn above and below, reminiscent of devices seen more frequently in Persian tribal weaving. A large scale rendition of the 'Herati pattern' of blossoms, leaves and palmettes arranged around diamond lattices is drawn colorfully throughout the field and within the golden corner pieces. A white ground meandering border of leaves and rosettes compliments the central medallion, and both of the light elements adeptly balance against the dark field and guard borders. Property of a California owner.
