Designed by textile artist Marianne Richter (1916-2010) of the Marta Maas Fjettterstrom workshop in Bastad, Sweden, this chic flatwoven Scandinavian carpet uses hues of gold and tan invoking mosaic tiles and cobblestone. Carpets from this leading twentieth-century Swedish atelier are known for their particular color sense that isolates a set point on the spectrum and with apparent effortless sophistication, plays with hue and tone. While the larger striped vertical sections of the field are most apparent, in keeping with the distinct aesthetic of these mid-century Scandinavian pieces, a subtle use of horizontal lines gives added compositional depth. Property of a New York collector. Purported to have been purchased by her mother directly from the workshop.
