Oriental Rugs, Vintage Rugs, and Antique Rugs by Peter Pap

Kashan

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

During the early twentieth-century, pictorial rugs became increasingly popular among Persian weavers. Perhaps influenced by painting, pictorial compositions highlighted the expertise of weaving workshops and helped to demonstrate that in Persia, weaving was seen as a vital fine art. This piece from Kashan depicts an idealistic landscape complete with architecture, gardens, nomad tents and a flock of sheep. The border is drawn with similar subject matter and intriguingly adds donkeys and peacocks.
