Silk Kashan

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Situated in a mountainous arid region of central Persia, Kashan is not known for its pasture lands. Though a major textile center since at least the 16th century, the city was mainly renowned for dying and sericulture. Velvet and silk carpets were produced during the Safavid era; several important surviving examples of these early pieces can now be found in western museum collections. This silk Kashan combines traditional Persian palmettes and vase design with more naturalistic European style roses and flowers. Such an international approach to design was well in keeping with Persian taste of the early 20th century.
