Kirman

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Kirman, located in the remote southeast of Persia, has a weaving tradition going back to at least the 16th century. At this time, Kirman workshops, which operated as private enterprises, rivaled those of the imperial ateliers in other parts of Persia and wove the celebrated 'vase carpets' of the classical era. Because of its proximity to India, Kirman carpets of the 19th and 20th centuries are often infused with a lighter flavor, reminiscent of late Mughal aesthetic, in both color and mood. This charming rug draws a central medallion composed of floral garlands against a sky blue ground. Of particular merit is the rose-colored carnation drawn at the center; its wispy foliage creates a subtle horizontal wave. Property of a California collector
