With cheerful color, pleasant and simple designs, thick wool pile ,and rustic single-wefted construction, scatter rugs from the vicinity of Hamadan in western Persia became some of the most popular rugs of the early 20th century. Though produced in larger numbers than some other village and tribal rugs, Hamadans retain much of the spirit admired in Persian carpets from the preceding century. Indeed, this happy piece paints colorful flowering plants and birds against a rose field complimented by no fewer than four different shades of blue. The composition is informal, while retaining a classic Persian sense of structure and harmony.
