Dhurrie

Early 20th Century
India
DESCRIPTION:

Flatwoven cotton carpets, known as dhurries, have been made in India for centuries. These pieces are known for their light palette and construction. Dhurries are often striped, but pictorial compositions are not uncommon. This charming example draws a happy animal scene with both wild and domestic varieties. A pair of birds fly at the top while fish are seen swimming at the bottom. Horses, camels, crocodiles, tigers, and elephants are all drawn against a soft sky-blue ground. A simple meandering indigo border, punctuated by eight-pointed stars, frames the composition. While dhurries have been a fixture of the American antique market for several decades, few are as intricate or charming as this piece.
