Shirvan

c. 1900
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

This exciting Shirvan rug from the east Caucasus blends a joyful design with pure fantasy. A stylized flowering shrub is drawn in the center of the field, flanked by two flowering fruit trees. An animal combat under an anthropomorphic human-faced sun, pairs of majestic peacocks, striding deer, pomegranate trees and rarely seen elephants and riders fill the bottom third of the field. An inner border paints colorful shrubs drawn with ewers, birds, and even a male figure. Framing this extraordinary composition is a classic 'harshang' or 'crab' border, which was used in rug weaving throughout the Caucasus and Northwest Persia.
