Afshar Bagface

c. 1900
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

This fine Afshar knotted pile bag face was probably originally part of a chanteh or personal bag. The field is drawn with delicate quatrefoil elements set within an ivory lattice. The rich colors of these elements is offset against a deep indigo ground. These quatrefoil devices are of a floral type seen in the pile weavings of several south Persian tribal groups, including the Afshar. They are particularly well rendered here, and the weaver used deep vegetal hues in her sophisticated implementation of tone on tone. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin.
