Afshar sumak bag

c. 1900
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Storage bags and animal trappings were essential domestic items for the nomads of south Persia. This large storage bag was woven as a utilitarian object to be used within the home. Despite its function, great care and skill were taken in its weaving. Bands with rows of repeat geometric ornament are flat woven using sumak technique with smaller bands of weft float. White cotton is used for an extra sense of contrast. This piece is full and complete with its original looped fasteners intact. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin.
