Oriental Rugs, Vintage Rugs, and Antique Rugs by Peter Pap

Kurd

c. 1900
Northwest Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Kurdish rugs are known for their often eclectic collection of features. With a spacious camel ground, this Kurdish long rug reflects the tribal origin of these Northwest Persian weavers. A single column of multi-lobed medallions is drawn spaciously in the field, which is traced in a multi-colored barber pole lattice. Curiously, both the type of floral border and the medallion type are seen more frequently in Anatolian weaving from the Kirshehir region. Whether this is a case of simple cultural borrowing or perhaps evidence of an earlier more international tradition of weaving design is unclear.
