Konya Yastik

19th C (3rd Q)
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

'Yastik' means pillow in Turkish. Hailing from the vicinity of the city of Konya, in central Anatolia, this small graphic pile panel was originally woven with a plain flat woven back and was originally stuffed for use. Like the vast majority of older examples of yastiks, only the front remains. Two boxes, comprised of layers of colorful latch hook medallions with simple triangular corner-pieces, comprise the field. In the spirit of Turkish village weaving, the color of the piece is vibrant and cheerful and the wool is soft and supple. Because of their small size and diversity of designs, yastiks are some of the most popularly collectible Anatolian weavings. This Konya piece is extremely geometric in design with active positive and negative spacing.
