Karabagh

c. 1900
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

The three sun burst medallions drawn in the field of this cheerful Caucasian Karabagh rug recall those of the so-called 'Eagle Kazaks' of the same region. Each of the large motifs is rendered here in alternating red and blue and traced energetically in rotating white and red outlining. Birds, quadrupeds, and smaller geometric Caucasian folk motifs are drawn throughout the medium blue field. This piece is dated 1902 and is inscribed in Armenian.
