Kurdish village rug

c. 1900
Northwest Persia
DESCRIPTION:

The Kurdish area of western Persia was home to some of the most prolific village weavers of the 19th century. This charming rug from the region draws a field of floral bursts against a madder red ground. While an underlying lattice structure is apparent, it is freer and more fluid than most of the type. The piece is framed by an elegant white border frequently seen in Persian village rugs of the Malayer type.
