Shikli Kazak

Early 20th Century
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

This finely woven Caucasian rug belongs to a small group of weavings from the Caucasus Mountains known within the literature as Shikli. Most authorities designate the type as Kazak, though they are often more finely woven and their drawing distinctively less geometric. This piece uses the classic Shikli design of a central medallion flanked by three elongated tree palmettes on either side. The ground is a saturated madder red which serves as a rich canvas and contrasts well with the central white medallion. The central medallion of this piece is quite special, combining various small elements from the repertoire of Caucasian folk weaving including birds and abstracted shrubs. Collection of Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price
