Qashqai rug

c. 1900
Southwest Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Qashqai tribal rugs from southwestern Persia frequently combine the format of more formal Persian workshop carpets with a rendering of ornament, drawing, and color which is uniquely their own. This dynamic Qashqai rug uses a medallion format with corner pieces. However, instead of the typical lobed or circular medallion, a central square is used here. Octagonal floral devices, of the type seen in southwest Persian tribal bags, are drawn within the central square to punctuate each of the four corner pieces. Much of the field drawing, particularly the geometrically rendered leaves that form an interlocking repeat design through the top and bottom of the field and the flowering shrubs drawn on both sides of the square medallion, are more typically found in Qashqai pile animal bags.
