Bakhshaish rug

c. 1900
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Woven in the far northwest region of Persia, this Bakhshaish carpet draws an all-over field of alternating palmettes and blossoms known as 'harshang design'. This distinctive arrangement was popularized throughout Persia in the 18th and 19th centuries. While Bakhshaish weavings tend to be more freely drawn than most Persian workshop pieces, this example is remarkably faithful to the original conception of 'harshang design'. Delicate floral centers are rendered much as they would have been nearly two-hundred years prior. Colors are soft mixing pleasing rose-madder hues with soft blues and hints of gold.
