This large Afshar bag represents one of a pair from a double saddle bag set, or ‘khorjin’. While the side bindings have been removed, the complete kilim back has been preserved. Within the large indigo field, a stepped sixteen-pointed medallion, of the type more typically seen in small Afshar rugs, is drawn. This variant, however, is flanked at each corner by diamond latch-hook ornament, a convention seen with various south Persian bag types. The wool of this piece is soft, and the drawing is executed crisply in a beautiful traditional Afshar palette. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin.
