For tribal nomads, their sheep flocks were their direct economy and basis of their wealth and fortune. Any domestic item that could be made from local wool generally was. This Afshar baby cradle is just one of several specific item types woven by tribal women for immediate domestic use. Several techniques of flat weave have been utilized with abstract ‘boteh’ paisley forms framed by a sumak border. Excess warp has been joined into decorative tassels, while colorful woolen bunches have been attached to each corner.
