The palmette form drawn repeatedly against the indigo ground of this charming Afshar rug is of a variety seen almost exclusively in Afshar pile weavings. It has been described by some collectors as a ‘turtle palmette,’ and is arranged here in rows of three – or at times, two and two halves. While the majority of these palmettes are colored a saturated red terra cotta, curiously, a single white motif is rendered towards the upper right hand side of the field.
