The structure of various flat-weaves is said to determine an array of ornament and shapes that make up the vocabulary of Oriental rugs. This Turkish kilim woven in the slit-tapestry technique draws reciprocal bands of linked pendants in rose-madder and indigo. This pattern is seen both in some knotted pile pieces from the Konya area as well as forming the so-called ‘syrga’ design seen in Turkmen, particularly Yomut, pile weaving from Central Asia. While this piece may safely be dated to the 19th century, the aesthetic it represents is as early as weaving itself.
