Bidjar carpets are renowned for their sturdy construction balancing a thick depressed-warp weave with elegantly detailed drawing. This Bidjar rug exemplifies the qualities of the type. Against a saturated madder red ground, a fine jewel-like all-over rendition of the Persian ‘Herati pattern’ is drawn in small scale linking colorful palmettes, blossoms, and foliage. Refined corner-pieces are used in a classic Persian manner but the pictorial medallion they off-set is anything but standard. This seemingly unique medallion may be the defining feature of the piece. Within its garlanded contours a pair of recumbent deer relax on either side of a central tree in front of a mountainous landscape. The result is a composition which blends a traditional format with with elements of a more personalized sense of folk art.
