Dhurrie

While in recent years Indian flatweaves, known as dhurries, have become more prominent on the market as cheaper alternatives to pile carpets, this piece is different. It uses more colors than most dhurries; two blues, cream, white, red and a touch of aubergine. An intricate ‘mihrab’ or niche is woven sideways. Graphically, it balances open spaces, with curvilinear vegetal scrolls and an array of geometric designs including an intriguing almost three-dimensional pattern composed of repeating multicolored parallelograms.
