This classic Chinese throne back draws three five-clawed dragons against a golden ground. The bottom border has ‘magic mountain’ imagery, while several varieties of flowering plants, perhaps representing the four seasons, are traced on the sides. The top is punctuated by a butterfly. Such iconic drawing may be seen in throne backs woven in Ningxia from at least the 18th century, and may go back to Ming prototypes.
