It is very unusual to see a room-sized rug with the design of a smaller niched or directional piece. This splendid Tabriz carpet draws in large scale and size the format of a much smaller Persian prayer rug or “meditation carpet”. These smaller pieces were woven finely, often of silk, and were prized as elegant wall-hangings in Persia and as luxurious decorative imports in the West. This room-sized rendition captures the genre perfectly. Stalks of flowering blossoms emanate from a stylized vase atop a magic mountain to form foliage reminiscent of peacock plumes. The fine yet sturdy weave and pale coloration are in keeping with the highest quality of nineteenth-century Tabriz pieces.
