This knotted pile carpet draws large bunches of floral bouquets against a dark ground. Complementary floral borders link large rose flowers and foliage. While the inspiration for this imagery was French, this carpet was most likely woven in southern Ukraine or Moldova. During the turn of the century, French models were at the height of fashion across Europe and beyond. The floral imagery drawn here is most likely derived from French tapestries of the Aubusson type.
