Woven in the central Persian city of Yazd, this elegant rug draws sinuous flowering vine-scroll emanating horizontally against an ivory ground. This organic floral design along with the ‘boteh’ paisleys lining the interior of the field are reminiscent of contemporaneous Persian and Indian shawls and there is a definite ‘textile aesthetic’ to this piece. The various rose tones, both light and saturated, are derived from an insect dye, perhaps cochineal but more likely lac imported from neighboring India. The slender borders framing the piece are composed of various forms of roses and may have been derived from 19th century French tapestries which were quite popular throughout the Persian empire during the 19th century.
